The LED Mask That Dethroned My Whole Collection

I've tested over fifteen LED devices at this point — masks, panels, wands, all of it. For the past few years, my rotation had narrowed down to two full systems: one from Maysama, one from Currentbody. Both sets have a face piece and a neck-and-chest piece, and I used them in constant rotation.

Well, I used to. Now I only use one.

Getting into my rotation at all is hard. Getting me down to one is a completely different level. The two sets I'm talking about are the Maysama Prana (face and neck) and the Currentbody Series 2 (face and neck), and both earned their place — both are genuinely good. The Currentbody set had the most comfortable fit of anything I owned, and more LEDs than most of the competition, which I liked. The Maysama Prana won me over with pulse light technology and the ability to isolate red or near-infrared light on their own, which matters if you deal with melasma — plus it had variable session times and a controller that actually told me useful information, like battery level. That was a game changer at the time.

So this was never a case of my old devices being bad. I loved them both. It's just that something came along and did what both of them did, but better.

What Replaced Them

Maysama's new duo, called the AURA, has completely taken over. The face mask and its matching Neck2Dec piece — the Head to Heart combo — has officially dethroned both of my old sets. Let's get into why.

The Specs

The mask is made of a 3D contour silicone, which is genuinely unique — I haven't felt anything else like it. It has 155 dual-core LEDs and pulse light technology, with three wavelengths to choose from: red plus near-infrared, red only, or near-infrared only. It's wireless, comes with a two-year warranty, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Fit & Design

The fit on this is outrageously good. It's actually soft to the touch, which is completely different from every other mask I own — they all have that hard, rigid feel. This one hugs every part of my face, and that's exactly what you want, because you want those LED bulbs as close to your skin as physically possible. The adjustable chin strap means it's fully customisable to your face shape rather than a one-size-compromise, and it's covered in LEDs right along that potentially flabby jaw area — some of you know exactly what I mean. The strap around the head is so solid there's zero slippage. It's just a big hug.

The lips aren't fully covered the way they are on the Prana, which I did like about that mask, but the opening here is large enough to breathe easily while still being small enough to get full LED lip coverage. Because I don't know about you, but I feel those lip lines coming around the corner.

The Neck2Dec piece is just as good. The chest coverage is huge, just the way I like it. I have a really small neck, which has always made for a tricky fit with other masks, but there's so much velcro on this one that I can sort of jerry-rig it into a nice, snug fit. It's fantastic.

The Controllers

Here's something very cool — both masks charge magnetically. No wire, no separate controller you have to clip to your waistband. Charging and swapping between them is genuinely effortless.

The face mask has two pieces: the controller, where you turn it on and off and select your wavelength and session time (it defaults to a red plus NIR, six-minute session), and the removable battery, which just pops off, plugs in to charge, and pops back into place. The Neck2Dec has one piece that does both. Because everything is cordless, I wear these doing actual life — folding laundry, ironing, working on my laptop. The only thing I haven't tried yet is wearing it on a plane. Yet.

The Battery Indicator

This is a small thing that made my day. I'm not always great about reading instructions, so I didn't even realise there was a battery indicator on this device until I caught it in the mirror — probably after more than eight uses. There are three little lights on the charging disk itself, and once it drops from three down to one, I plug it in. A little accidental discovery, and a small moment of delight. It's not even a new idea — the Prana's charger showed battery info too, and I loved that. This is the same idea, just even better.

The Tech

Underneath all of this is Maysama's Intelligent Micro-pulsing technology, which both the face mask and the Neck2Dec share. Why does pulsing matter at all? Think of your skin cells breathing — light on, the cell responds; light off, it rests and absorbs. Continuous light, which most masks use, skips that rest, and eventually the cell stops responding as well. That's why there's such a thing as too much LED.

Pulsed light builds recovery in, and Intelligent Micro-pulsing goes further, timing those pulses to match the cell's own natural rhythm rather than an arbitrary on-off pattern. There's smart dosing too — if you switch to red-only or infrared-only, the light intensity naturally drops, so the treatment time auto-extends to keep every session within the right dose range, regardless of which mode you're on. Not sure I would have even thought of that one myself.

Here's another thing you may not know about pulse technology. If you apply a serum before you LED, it's often recommended you wait twenty minutes for the active ingredients to sink in first. With pulse light, you don't have to. Voilà.

The Serum Pairing

As you probably already know, I pair this with Maysama's Green Rooibos Pressed Serum, which I've used for years. The short version of why: red and near-infrared light drive a lot of cellular activity, including a burst of free radicals as a by-product, and this antioxidant serum helps manage that. There's research showing Maysama's green rooibos and LED actually make each other work better — the serum helps the light be more effective, and the light helps the serum absorb faster. Results are apparently up to 260% better together. That's why I've been using it for years.

My Protocol

My aim is to LED every day. Realistically, I average about five to six times a week. I double cleanse, apply the serum, then, because this is a pulse device, mask immediately — skincare routine follows after. If I'm doing laser or microneedling, this comes in afterward too, to help with recovery.

The device defaults to a six-minute session, though shorter options exist. I actually asked Bev, Maysama's owner, for her recommendation, and she confirmed a six-minute red-and-NIR session is the optimum, so that's what I stick to. I do get melasma in the summer, and I still use red and infrared together rather than isolating just one.

On Results

This isn't a results video, and I'm not sharing before-and-afters. I haven't done an isolated, controlled test on this device, or any LED device, in years — I've done the LED reviews, put them through the paces, and I already buy into the effectiveness at this point. If I could only keep one modality for the rest of my life, it would be LED. I genuinely think everyone should have LED in their life — I've been bugging Gary about it for years.

I do tend to rotate several devices, each with a specific job, and when you find the right tool for the right job, it just slots into your routine. It's like striking gold. This is one of those. And before you ask, no, I don't do anything in-clinic — no botox, no fillers, no Sculptra. I'm all about what works for me at home.

The Verdict

If I could only have one LED device, it would be this one, specifically the AURA Head to Heart combo. The face mask alone is $575, the Neck2Dec is $395, and the Head to Heart combo together is $873. For comparison, the Prana is $375 and the Currentbody Series 2 is $469 — so the AURA is the most expensive of the three, but honestly, I think it could cost more for what it delivers.
