Over 50: 10 Small Things That Fixed Annoying Problems

No hype. Just things that actually helped.

If you’re over 50 and tired of products that promise everything and change nothing, this is for you.

I’m 54. My skin is dry. My eyeliner skills have declined dramatically. And some of my clothes almost work… but not quite.

Over the past few months, I’ve made a few very small changes. None of these are trendy. None of them are new. But each one quietly fixed a specific problem.

And at this stage, that’s what I care about — fewer promises, more solutions.

Here are the small things that genuinely made my life easier.

1. The Lip Routine That Actually Fixes Dryness

Let’s start with the first complaint: lips.

Between age and winter, mine need constant attention. And most lip products just sit on top without really doing anything.

The Dr Edriss Lip Basting Duo is different.

Step one gently resurfaces with AHAs and PHAs — no scrubbing, no aggression. Step two replenishes with a rich, barrier-supporting balm.

Resurface, then repair.

I thought this would be overcomplicated. It’s not. It actually solves the problem.

2. The Eye Balm That Softens Crepey Skin

It’s not lines that bother me. It’s crepiness.

The RoC Multi Correxion Eye Balm has become a staple because of how it feels.

It glides on, softens instantly, and makes the under-eye area look smoother before I even apply makeup. I use it after sunscreen and top it up during the day.

One note: check the twist mechanism before you leave the shop. Mine had to go back.

But as a format? Brilliant.

3. The Product That Finally Toned Down Redness

I don’t have reactive skin — just constant, low-level redness that never quite goes away.

The Dr Jart Cicapair Colour Correcting Treatment changed that.

It starts green, blends to beige, and neutralises redness beautifully. On no-makeup days, this is all I wear. On makeup days, it means I use far less foundation.

Simple, effective, and genuinely useful.

4. The Glow Trick for Winter Skin

Once redness is sorted, I miss warmth.

The Sacheu Liquid Glow Stain gives that back. (use code: SOM15 for 15% off)

It’s not a bronzer — it’s a punchy glow product that sits underneath makeup and creates a “lit from within” effect.

Slightly alarming when you first apply it. Completely worth it once everything goes on top.

5. The Eyeliner That Removed the Struggle

The cat eye has humbled me for decades.

Between hooded lids, reduced vision, and a few well-placed wrinkles, it’s… not easy.

The Hanakoko Eyeliner Stamp changed that.

You stamp, and you’re done. It even bends to help with positioning. And it comes in brown, which is softer and far more forgiving.

For once, no frustration.

6. The Nail System That Actually Lasts

I am outrageously hard on my nails.

Regular polish doesn’t last a day. Salon treatments are great — but expensive.

The Dazzle Dry system is the only at-home option that lasts me about ten days.

It requires a full system (prep, primer, colour, top coat), but it dries in five minutes and removes like regular polish.

It’s the closest thing to salon results without the commitment.

7. The Scalp Fix That Wasn’t About Shampoo

Before blaming another shampoo, I finally looked at my water.

Dublin has hard water. Not dramatic, but enough to cause build-up over time.

The Hello Klean Shower Filter made a noticeable difference.

My hair feels lighter, cleaner, and softer. Not coated.

Sometimes the issue isn’t the product — it’s what’s happening underneath it.

8. The Clothing Hack That Makes Everything Fit Better

At five foot one, nothing fits perfectly.

The Stitchy tool is basically a modern safety pin — but better.

You can adjust waistlines, fix collars, hold sleeves, and tweak fit instantly without damaging clothes.

It looks gimmicky. It’s not. It works.

Just don’t buy the cheap version. I made that mistake.

9. The Winter Fix That Saved My Fringe

I love hats. But once I got a fringe, they became impossible.

Enter earmuffs.

They are not chic. They are not glamorous. But they keep my ears warm and my hair intact.

Sometimes practicality wins.

10. The Smallest Fix That Made the Biggest Difference

This one surprised me the most.

I started getting pain in my left hand from holding my phone. Small hands, big phone — not a great combination.

A MagSafe pop socket fixed it almost instantly.

The pain disappeared. And now I rely on it daily.

The only downside? I keep losing them… and then finding them again.

Final Thoughts

None of these are new. None are particularly exciting.

But every one of them solved something specific.

And at this stage, I’m not chasing miracles. I’m chasing fewer annoyances.

If you’re over 50 and quietly refining things rather than chasing trends, I hope something here helps.

And if you’ve found a small, practical fix that made a difference — tell me.

I’m always looking for those. 💛
